Art I-Pottery

November 19th, 2008

The Art room is covered in dust at the moment due to the building of enormous clay coil pots. The Art I students have just completed the first phase of building their coil pots (which are all at least 11″ tall). After the pottery has dried for one and half weeks, they will be fired in the kiln. Once the pottery is fired, the students will begin glazing their pieces.

In the mean time, the students will be working on a still life drawing focusing on shading and highlights.

Once the students come back from Thanksgiving vacation, they will begin working on their 2nd pottery project based on the concept of a Limoge Box. Limoge boxes originated in France. They are usually about 2 inches tall and are extremely detailed. The students will be creating their own version of a Limoge Box based on a well known structure in Memphis.

Many students have also signed up for an optional opportunity of “throwing a pot” on the wheel. Almost all of the students who have thrown on the wheel have a small pot as a result of their first lesson. It is not an easy feat to throw a pot. Way to go Art I students!

As you can see, we have been extremely busy in Art I. Once the dust settles in a few weeks, there should be some beautiful pottery pieces lining the shelves of the Art room.

Art I -Extra Credit

August 15th, 2008

Each semester students are given a one time opportunity to earn 20 points extra credit by visiting an exhibition at a museum. They are asked to fill out the extra credit form in which the student writes about the exhibit and has their parent sign the extra credit form.

This is a very easy way to boost their grade and to view some incredible works of art!
