Susan Helms (left), director of Safe Kids Mid-South, presents an award certificate to Sally Cook, Elementary Supervisor, recognizing the three Harding Academy teams who placed in the Safe Tweens Photography Contest, sponsored by LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center and Kohl’s Cares for Kids. Winners were announced at the Safe Kids Fun Fest on April 26 at Bass Pro Shops. White Station fifth graders Jack Ehemann, Caleb Ellis, Christopher Galbreath, Will Jones, Joshua Pae, and Michael Pilgreen each won a $35 Target gift card and their teacher, Mrs. Martha Ann Bledsoe, won a $100 Knowledge Tree gift certificate for the group’s photos depicting safe and unsafe car behavior.
A fifth grade team from Southwind placed third for their photos representing kitchen/fire safety. Carissa Sevier, Morgan Threatt, and Cheenu Tiwari each received a $15 Target gift card and their teacher, Mrs. Dianna Autry, received a $100 Knowledge Tree gift certificate.
White Station fifth graders Grace Barber, Michael McFadden, Jennifer Nichols, Zach Reidel, and Joshua Thornton received honorable mention for their photos representing wheel safety.
The purpose of the contest was to increase Tweens’ awareness of safe and unsafe situations in their environment. In addition to the photos, the students submitted written descriptions of the safe and unsafe environments which will be displayed with the photos as they are used in public displays.
“Harding will be represented well when these photos and the descriptions are displayed.,” Miss Cook said. “We are proud of the students’ work and, more importantly, we are proud of how serious they took the topic of safety. Safe Kids gave them an excellent age-appropriate way to share their safety knowledge.”
